The power of lip cleansing in the Black community goes far beyond basic hygiene; it is a modern reclamation of royal ancestry. Historically, African royalty used natural botanicals, oils, and exfoliants to maintain their physical appearance, viewing the body as a temple. In the modern world, intentional lip care—scrubbing away dull skin, hydrating deeply, and presenting a polished smile—serves as a daily ritual that commands respect and projects inner majesty before a single word is spoken.

The Ancestral Roots of Royal Grooming

  • Ancient rituals: African kings and queens utilized shea butter, honey, and oils for skin protection.
  • Body as a temple: Grooming was never superficial; it signified health, status, and spiritual alignment.
  • Sacred presentation: Maintaining a flawless appearance was an honored duty among community leaders.

Elevating the Modern Black Aesthetic

  • Melanin protection: Richly pigmented lips are prone to hyperpigmentation, dryness, and environmental damage.
  • Exfoliation benefits: Gentle scrubbing removes dead skin cells to reveal the natural, vibrant tone beneath.
  • Hydration focus: Deep moisture prevents cracking and keeps lips looking supple and healthy.

Speaking with Royal Authority

  • First impressions: A healthy smile instantly projects confidence, clarity, and self-respect in professional spaces.
  • The power of speech: Caring for the mouth honors the words, wisdom, and truth you speak into existence.
  • Reclaiming luxury: Dedicating time to a multi-step lip routine reframes daily grooming into an act of luxury.

The Cleanse

While there are many ways to accomplish this and many products on the market, this is the way I learned and therefore the way I recommend. Head to your local dollar store or check your pantry for these items.

Crafting Your Royal Lip Cleansing Ritual

  1. Purchase: Toothbrush, lemon juice, sugar, honey, organic virgin coconut oil, small towel and cup/bowl of your choice.
  2. Mix: 1 teaspoon of honey, 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice, 2 teaspoons of sugar(add as necessary to form a paste).
  3. Scrub: Moisten your lips with saliva so this won’t feel so harsh. Take your toothbrush and mix it into the paste. Scrub your lips gently for 2 minutes. Dont miss a spot!
  4. Let Sit: Let sit for approximately 5 minutes.
  5. Rinse: Rinse off softly with water and pat dry.
  6. Hydrate: Rehydrate your lips with Organic Virgin Coconut Oil.
  7. Repeat: No more than twice weekly.
